12V Incubators.

Following the storm, our electric supply has become very unreliable. Has anyone any experience using 12V incubators? I have seen some cheap Chinese models but wondered if it was possible to a get a good make?

Before anyone suggests it, I mainly hatch under broodies, but like to hatch a few in an incubator to top them up as I find they can rear more chicks than they can hatch eggs.

I saw a cheap mains powered incubator, the type that does around six eggs. The cost is 30 pounds from Amazon

Strangely enough there are even a couple of good reports for the garbage.

A 12V one would be of a similar pattern, low power as the current would be very high for anything but a small number of eggs.

It is easy to construct an incubator. A 12V controller plus a PTC heater would be far more effective as a DIY project as insulation could be added with no regards to mailing requirements.

During long power cuts, you could limit the ventilation and keep current flow down to one or 2 A/H

I built a mains incubator that uses a mix of what was available. The heating element and PID controller is 230V, but the stuff like overtemperature monitoring and the air circulation fans are 12V

The heater to that is fairly small, but I just kept adding polystyrene sheeting until it took most of the bench up.

The Amazon device incidentally was accurate as regards control, it was totally useless though regarding the exposure of the fan and electrics to the high humidity internals.

It lasted around seven days whereas my lash up has done numerous batches of eggs and works a treat with seedlings too.

The Mini & Maxi range of Brinsea Incubators can be run off 12 volt in an emergency and many people with these units buy the 12 volt lead for them.
We also sell alot of these for egg transportation.

Flock Master, many thanks, that looks like what I need and with decades of good experience with Brinsea machines I am more than happy to go that route.

Do you know why the adapter is only for temporary use? Idealy I would like to attach it to leisure battery, connected to a charger, so it would continue to function if the power fails when I am not around.
