Tomatoes, indeterminate, determinate?

Hi, is the determinate/ indeterminate bit of importance or a rigid type of feature?

All the books state the importance of pruning and supporting each type as a different plant type almost.

Is this kiddums? I bought several varieties of tomatoes for this year, all the packs indicate fast grow features or flavour, but not one states whether the "very important" type of growth is determinate or indeterminate.

I grew some last year and they were a sort of squat bush and I stck a cane in where I thought it would help.

Success was mixed, so I thought I would try to do things properly this year.
