Cock Fighting

Met a guy today who seemed very interested in chickens, had a great chat and in the end i aked him how many hens he had. He said no hens just a load of cocks. When i asked why he said he fights them around the country....

i didn't know this still happenend in ireland, he said there's huge money in it and the large game birds change hands for 100's of euro.

I would have said the same as Josh. Yep its going on all the time. Very bad, Mainly half breed game and travllers/conmen that cant breed birds into it but no offence to anyone.

“No offence to anyone!!!”…Tommy.... You have just tarred an entire ethnic minority as blood thirsty conmen. I’d be very very careful if I were you. A comment like that could be a serious down fall for you. Do you not think Travelers/conmen have internet access?

Cock fighting has been going on for years in Ireland. And let me assure you it’s not the travelers/conmen with half breed cocks that are the problem. It’s a large gathering of, what I would call middleclass people with more money than sense that are at the forefront of this barbaric “sport”.

“Mainly half breed game”… These birds are pure athletes, bred to perfection and kept in the avian equivalent of a 5 star hotel. The condition these birds are presented in prior to a fight is immaculate. The time and effort that is put into preparing these birds is unbelievable.

Perhaps you should refrain from having an opinion or taking someone else’s until you have a few facts. It’s quite clear you have never been to a cockfight and have no knowledge of the subject.

I don’t agree with blood sports of any kind and find it difficult to comprehend how a gathering of people can get their kicks watching two chickens fight to the death. But the fact is it is happening and growing in popularity every year.

Thats brill. Is it illegal though? Sorry Paddy no I havnt been to one.. I heard they get great care a big shad per cock and stuff. I like purebred game but there is a lot of game halfbreds talking to a man who knows. I have nothing against Travelers or anyone,, I wasnt trying to be offencive sorry. I just think its cruel but as you say their bred for it.

Paddy, you have just tarred, what you call middle-class people with the same brush you accused Tommy of doing it with travelers. I really don't mean to offend you but you do seem very informed.

I didnt mean to start a fight. I was talkin to guys that go. Said they do get raided by guards?

In response to Tommy. How can you comment on a subject that you have so little knowledge of you don’t even know if it’s legal or not. Comments without any knowledge have no place on an information forum….Quote.. “I was talkin to guys that go”… This is how fairy stories get mistaken for fact.

Quote… “I just think its cruel but as you say their bred for it.”… If you took the time to read my entire comment you will see that I in no way condone blood sports and my actual comment was “they are bred to perfection”….

Lynn. I take your point about tarring the Middle class people. I was simply demonstrating that the misconception only members of the traveling community organize or partake in cockfighting couldn’t be further from the truth. I have some knowledge of Game birds and am particularly fond of Game birds but again I stress, I do not agree or partake in any type of blood sports but they do exist and to an extent far greater than people would expect.

Im not saying you condone it Paddy. I take you point, Thanks for the reply. I shouldnt have commmented on something I dont know about. From what I heard thats what I gathered, Must have been wrong, I just wanted to say I dont condone it either.

Cock fighting, dog fighting, badger baiting - the country is ripe with it and the gardai are useless even if you report it. Or alternatively, if they get caught in the act, they get off with a slap on the wrist *tut tut - don't do it again*.

SICK bast*rds.

Read through the discussion very carefully again.
The word that seems to pop up loads is "money" - and this makes it sound as if cock fighting were more acceptable were there no money involved or to be made.

@ Paddy
"Perhaps you should refrain from having an opinion or taking someone else’s until you have a few facts. It’s quite clear you have never been to a cockfight and have no knowledge of the subject."

Have you been to a cockfight?
I haven't but I dare form an opinion on the matter.

Anon,

"I wont be reporting him, whats the point?

He is involved in an ILLEGAL (sorry for "shouting) activity.
Do you realise you could be classed as an acessory to illegal activity if you know about him and don't report?

*and as for sarah, dont get me started.*

I have started, 13 years ago, anon, when I founded Ireland's only Bull Breed Rescue. So you can imagine how *up to date* I am on dogfighting and badger baiting in this country :(.

RE cock fighting...please report even the smallest iota of info you have on this to the guards...it's this attitude of silence and not saying a word that enables this horrific cruelty to go on...pick up the phone for God's sake...to the SPCA if not the guards. let them handle it.
