Advice appreciated egg sales
Hi,
I'm thinking of sticking a few eggs outside the gate by the road. They are to be sold on an "honesty basis".
I will put a post box in too, It was on the to do list anyway, but will do for the cash.
Egg stamps seem a tad pricey, apparently unless the eggs are dated, people are not too keen.
Anyway I'm going for a date stamp and I thought an ink made of very strong coffee should be suitable on a H&S level.
Has anyone any thoughts on the subject please?
I am not looking to make money, the waste is creeping up though, I have buried a lot of last years in the garden. I don't dare use them as fertiliser in the greenhouse.
Basically the reason for the post is that I have never done anything like this before, I usually wash the badly soiled duck eggs in warm water if I give them to neighbours, but that's the limit of my dealings with the eggs so far.

Saturday, March 18th, 2023 Well I would advise not to wash eggs. I say this because if you wash them, they need to be refrigerated. Mostly the people of Ireland seem to keep their eggs at room temperature. So what I do to clean my eggs for selling is just use a piece of sand foam or my fingernail.
In the U.S. it is the opposite. The eggs are washed and people keep them in the refrigerater.
Eggs, I think, are technically supposed to be individually dated like you were talking about there. But what I do is put labels on my boxes with a best by date. I date the whole box of eggs for three weeks after the oldest egg in the box.
Now I sell my eggs at shops so I don't really know anything about selling them along the road.

Sunday, March 19th, 2023 Thank you.
I certainly didn't know about the need to refrigerate washed eggs.
I thought about approaching a shop, but I have only ten duck eggs a day and four chicken eggs.
I will change my approach, since moving the kwackers to the greenhouse, the cleanliness of the eggs has improved. I will move them back to the shed next week and stop feeding and watering them indoors.
Many thanks.

Sunday, March 19th, 2023 There are a lot of legalities about selling eggs. Without a licence and a lot of red tape we shouldn't be doing it. So the shop is definitely out as that might get them in trouble. Having said that there isn't much harm in an honesty box and you would want to be very unfortunate to get in trouble for that. Some people don't actually say "For Sale" as a precaution. I have done it and it works reasonably well. Most people are decent and honest but there are always one or two that's not. But it's only a few eggs at the end of the day. I wouldn't bother with a stamper. People won't expect that for farm eggs. For your own records just mark them with the date they are laid with a pencil. Sometimes when people get to know you have spare you can dispense with the box and they will call to the door. That is a !ot of duck eggs so you will need some plan for them. When I have eggs too old to sell I make microwave scrambled egg for hens as a treat and they love it!

Sunday, March 19th, 2023 Many thanks once again Joseph.
I have ordered the stamp and a postbox. The stamp will allow me to keep track of the eggs I give away anyway.
The postbox is a thing that I have intended to do for a long time, the turning into the road is not good.
I will word the sign "suggested donation" for the upkeep of my cute pets.
I never did sort the soft shell problem out with the Campbells incidentally. I might have had a dodgy genetic line.
The Harlequins are all giving solid shells and the other oddity was that around a 100% of the Harlequin eggs hatched, the Campbells started at 50% when I bought them in as hatching eggs, the eggs from those were around 10% fertile.
If I had not hatched the Harlequins, I would have assumed it was an incubation problem.
the chickens will get a boost to their diet it seems. Pooch is unable to jump the garden wall now, I have to open the gate for him, so I have cut his eggy treats down.
They are doing wonders for his coat though, I have been asked how I manage to groom him so well :-)
Thanks
K
