Hi everyone.I am starting a flock of Buff Orpingtons and am building a coop from scratch. Being a big breed of chicken, how high should I put the roosts in the coop?

Thanks for the advice.

Low enough that they can step onto, my lowest is 11" off the ground. I then have 3 more which are stepped up 8" at a time and each is set back about 14". I don't have large breeds but I played around with a few layouts and I found that this works for older hens. Most of mine perch on the highest roost but I have 1 who never goes higher than the lowest.

Could you cresote the roost bars or is it too strong a smell for the birds?

Don't use creosote inside, its carcinogenic and I thought it was banned already, no?

Itís for sale in my local co op so itís definitely not banned.

What you are seeing for sale is probably called creocote? it's not creosote. My understanding is that Creosote contained a poisonous ingredient which is banned so the product without this ingredient is creocote, which isn't as effective apparently.

Real creosote is banned. Anything called creosote or creocote isn't the real stuff. Bitumen paint is good. Just air out for a day or two
