Racing pigeon landed in our garden - the owner doesn't want it back. What to do?

A racing pigeon landed in our garden about 2-3 weeks ago. We started taking care of it by providing it bird seed and water thinking it would eventually make it's way home, but it keeps coming back.

We managed to contact the owner and unfortunately, they don't want to bother coming to get it and just asked if we could get it to a sanctuary.

We've grown quite fond of it so if we can give it a home we will but we're unsure what's required and whether it's wise to do so.

What is generally required in taking care of these guys? Should I place a cage in my shed and try get them into a routine of flying in and out? Is a small cage outside better (I guess not for winter)? Are they fine being alone or should we just take it to a sanctuary where it will be around other pigeons?

Any info on what the best course of action is would be much appreciated.

A small roost/ cage in your shed with an opening which can be closed at night should do. Most farm/ pet stores stock pigeon feed, some fresh water and that should be it. I have doves in an aviary and they spent the freezing winter nights in the open part, fairly hardy birds
