Best pigs to feed.

Would like to feed 2 pigs for about 6 months killing age about 8 months old, which bred would be the best and the cheapest meal to feed.

I rear 2 pigs every year..landrace cross duroc.. fed pig finishers and rolled barley at rate 1lb per month of age per day.. ie..4months old=4lb of meal a day.. pigs are free range on fresh grass every 2 weeks. Fed apples from windfall and vegetable leftovers.reared in summer months as put on too much fat in cold months
Costs
buy piglet 50
Butcher 100
Sausages 2 per kilo
Feed 100 per pig

Total average 270

My advice if you dont have room, and want to be cheap about it go to butcher and buy your meat.

Thanks for the above. At what age did you kill and what was your carcasse weight. I would be feeding mine indoors and would the landrace x white not be the best for this.?

Killed at 6 months as were male @80kg
Returned near 60kg each
1st pig all bacon 55kg
2nd pork 34kg
Sausages 30kg
I use duroc cross as outdoor but large white be better indoor.
You'll need to get a herd number which I'm not sure for indoor but for outdoor need proper shelter, continuous water supply and fully fenced enclosure. The department will inspect before issuing..

Again thanks for your great help. I would be feeding indoors and I reckon I should get bigger weights this is why I need a bigger breed of pig.

I kill females at 95kg if possible. I like to buy in march and kill in October but this year didnt get weaners until end of june. Most Butchers wont take pigs over 100kg.. best of luck with them. Its hugely rewarding
