Rats

Ok..so I have a problem. been fighting an on going battle with rats getting into my coops & sheds. Cannot put down poison because of the danger of my other animals. Did'nt know until recently that rats will kill hens !! They have killed 4 one at a time over the last three weeks. We have 4 farm cats who are doing there best to take them out but Im at my wits end if anyone has any ideas please??

Do you know anybody local who keeps terriers??
That would be your best bet, if you don't want to use poison.
Hope you get rid of them.

Happened to me a few times.Set plenty of traps by night when the hens are in. Put down the blocks of rat poision which you can secure so they wont carry them away.

Traps is your best bet, if poison is out of the question. Keeping traps down all year round 24/7, is the only way forward. Anything else is just a waste of time. Either kill traps in box's with a restricted entrance, or rat size live traps. Mink size traps won't be an option where you have cats etc, and kill type traps can't be set in the open for same reason. Very easy make up tunnels/boxes out of bits of old ply, or whatever you might have lying around.

As Nedzer says the key is having traps down year round,it takes too long for them to get used to strange objects when they become a problem so if they,re down all the time they are part of the landscape, baited but not set and then when they,re takin the bait set on a fine trigger. I use a mix of live traps and fen traps, chocolate spread on the bait plates works well for me. Good luck.

Trap them.peanut butter on a rat trap and you’ll get a heap of them.set them the minute you lock in the birds and check them and empty them and rebait them before bed.wear gloves. I do work 4 traps at the time and magpies or owls can eat the dead rat cos they aren’t poisonous.rats go mad for the ALDI peanut butter with the red lid
