The General Poultry Chat Forum

Discuss all aspects of raising poultry. No topic is too small

Is this site drying up

I mind the time when every post would have got a load of comments leading to good sales never mind the amount of people looking Poultry and waterfowl.
Is it the fact there not the same interest in poultry or is this site drying up and everyone is moving to poultry pages on Facebook???

The site these days gets plenty of views but sadly not too many new posts. The search facility looking back on topics gets a lot of use as there are thousands of topics covered, many more than once.
Last year there were over 400 new users mostly who posted for sale and wanted adverts. Some never posted anything and just viewed topics and used the breeders directory.
Only 36 people have updated the breeders directory for 2019 so far. 70 people contacted us to say they had gone out of poultry and were removed and we removed another 58 whose emails bounced back or phone numbers were invalid.
If you have any ideas to spruce up the site let us know. Canít promise anything but we will look at the costs involved and see.
The site was built from scratch by the old owner and does not use a platform that can be added to easily so additions have to be written in php and added in manually to folders which takes a great deal of knowledge and time.

A facility to upload photos would be good as people are very visually enticed these days and sellers can show their stock better. I'd say that's a big reason why people use the likes of Facebook and Imgur and if they had the option of putting photos here the site would get more traffic

Does that mean there are only 36 active breeders in poultry in Ireland? :(

...but then the sales are drying up too so there's no community for it to chat about here, on screen is good to a certain point, interacting in the real world is best

I personally am not on Facebook and would never go back :)

Maybe if flock master controlled it a bit better.. on Facebook admin will remove any people not contributing positively to forums. Here it's a free for all.. same names all the time. It's a pity too because I know a lot of people who don't use social media use this site to source birds.

Could it be set up as a app on your phone quick and easy access.
Something like DoneDeal,gumtree
I see on Facebook pages this past while that Poultry adds are been rejected and as a result DoneDeal is getting a bit more active,so maybe something like that would be good for though
Disappointing to read from flock master that roughly 150 members are gone in one request to update.
I personally notice there isnít the same drive for birds and yes the cost factors of keeping birds now are getting more expensive

It was bussy all through the ressession years as were the sales I think the country has moved chickens not in fashion any more and maybe thats for the best, now poultry keeping is going back to poultry keepers not the chicken dealers that plagued the sales for years.

I only have 3 hens and a handful of quail. I know people have moved on to Facebook and that but I also think there is very little selling going on. I have probably gave away more free quail than I sold, nearly delivered them to the doorstep. I still check this site every day though

I've not been on this site that long but I've found it handy a few times to get advise, plenty of knowledgeable people on it.

I found the breeders directory proved useful

But to buy or sell birds pictures are a must I think, in the breeders directory section if the breeding stock was shown it would bring another dimension

Iím new to this site and am getting chickens. I have found this site very good, so much information. Only thing I have found is that on the internet itís very hard to find places to process poultry or animals. Maybe if you could do a list of those as well like the breeders list.

I don't think it's fair to say its poorly managed tank girl it's outdated alright but still very functional, after all its a poultry website not social media.

There are loads of poultry in the country but Facebook is taking over see a lot more birds posted on various groups! an app would be handy and maybe profiles with pictures and breeds the person keeps
