Managing the ground poultry are on

I have had my flock in the same run for the past 8 years and they regularly free range but every year I usually dig up the soil and manure that builds up. Well I am going to dig it up again and do some maintenance to the pen while the flock will be moved into a shed.

I have heard that applying lime to the ground is good as a precautionary measure for worms which may be lurking about. Does anyone do this to their runs and if so how long to leave it before taking the birds back? How much lime would you use for a 15x5 foot run?
