Magpies

Does anybody know of a good way to stop magpies from going into the henhouse and eating the eggs. My hens are free ranging so are not under any cover such as wire netting

Catch one and hang it up on the hen house

That's a last resort for me as it means killing something. anyone ever used Scarybird or know where I would be able to get it or if its any good

Put a curtain of black landscape fabric on the door of the nest box, hens will get through, magpies and crows won't, that will stop hens eating eggs as well .

i put a cloth hanging over the coop pop hole, hens will go in but wild birds think its a trap.

Put up a sign. NO ENTRY MAGPIE OR GREY CROW. Ir will be as effective as the dangling sheet of fabric. 😀

You can get a plastic falcon or buzzard that looks very life like they keep everything away. Click the bird control and pest scares link on this site, it's the first under irishfowl shop

I agree with pearl,
I have a cloth hung up and birds never,
Get in to get the eggs.

Those plastic falcons / hawks are a waste of time and money , ours was so useless it was soon renamed the shitehawk , all it kept away was pigeons and they weren't a problem anyway .

I tried everything, and I mean everything to keep jackdaws out of the chickens house, putting cloth over the pop hole , shooting and hanging up the dead birds next to the door, nothing stopped them so I eventually put top netting over the entire run. Even then they found a couple of places where they could get their head in and squeeze the rest of themselves in. I know it's not possible for everyone to do this , but it was the only solution.
