housing restrictions

Housing restrictions on poultry imposed due to concerns over bird flu have been lifted by the Department of Agriculture.

Legislation requiring poultry to be kept indoors was introduced on 23 December 2016 after a number of cases of the disease were discovered in wild birds.

However no case of bird flu has been detected in wild birds in the last 8 weeks.

This, combined with reduced numbers of migratory waterfowl and improved weather conditions, mean the risk of poultry contracting the disease has fallen.

The change means that free range flocks will regain this status for marketing purposes.
