I have a German Shepard x husky.
He is a very very quiet dog.
He never causes any trouble.
He sometimes barks at a strangers car,
But if he ever sees something like a fox he will start barking at it.
He also catches mice.
The other day I was in the Haybarn and he just started sticking his head into the hay,
And he pulled out a mouse.
Good luck

Good jack russell or any terrier from working stock. It really helps younger pups to have older dogs to train them in and get the hang of things. Will also have pups soon myself 3/4 russell 1/4 beagle.

The next couple of months are a real danger time for fowl regarding foxs as they will be rearing cubs from now on,ive already heard of a couple of litters about. This thing of a dog barking at a fox might scare it away for a short time but you have to look at the bigger picture, unless your dog is on guard 24/7 the fox will eventually get what it wants if you are free ranging.Common sense is the best remedy to avoid a fox attack, keep fowl well secured and if you are free ranging use electric fencing around the perimiter of your garden[the netted stuff 4ft high] will keep foxs out and wing clip all your birds so as they dont fly over.

If your site is not exposed to strangers and you don't have close neighbors then Great Pyrenees, they are very protective "attack strangers" and bark all night

patterdale are very good all round hunting dogs, big dogs cant get into smaller places to hunt for rats, mice, etc,

Yes I concur with kathykin the Patterdale is an excellent all rounder an ancient breed that predates the pyramids originally bred in the Patterdale region of Siberia to hunt the now extinct hairy mammoths but now only used for black bears and caribou I'd say once word spreads through out the local fox population that you got one of these ferocious giant canines you'll have no more problems.

I have a half cross lurcher, 4 years old and is a demon on both rat and fox. She clears all the fences around us to chase the fox down and kill it. She will go out in the dark and guard all the rabbit and chicken houses and kill rats as soon as they make a move. We'll find carcasses in the morning. I have a three quarter lurcher 18 month old who is still learning, will be interesting to see how she develops.
I don't take them out to deliberately hunt fox, but if one passes through and lingers too long, it will be history. But only if the dogs are outside. Fowl are fair game if the dogs are inside.

Virginia's fowl there is no such thing as a full ratting terrier,it has to be a breed of some sort ie,Jack Russell or JRx or border, lakey patterdale or a mix match of various breeds, almost every breed of dog will kill rats some more effective than others but all will kill.Plumber terriers are renowed for ratting but again there a terrier with 3-4 different breeds in there make up.
