Depends on a lot of things as to what you want to spend , what distance you want and picture quality , for basic stuff most off the shelf cameras with ir will work

I just want to see what animals visit my garden at night, and see if anything visits the hen house during the day.
I want to spend under Ä100.

I bought a system on Aliexpress for £80, the brand is Annke, it was 4 cameras with IR for night vision, a recording box which you have to install a hard drive in for recording, good system, decent quality. you can view your cameras from any where via a mobile app.

Hard Drive will likely cost a few if you want a decent memory cache, how much memory does a video take Emmet? It sounds an interesting system!

My brother gave me an old computer hard drive, I get 16 days continuous recording of 4 cameras, it overwrites itself.

I'll try and get a link of the system I bought and put it up.

CCTV recording systems may not suit everyone. Power is needed, plus Internet or network connectivity and/or hard drive storage. If your chickens are not close to the house that may be a stretch.

An alternative that may suit is a trailcam, which can record photos or videos on a memory card. See www.trailcampro.com for some background. I have bought on Amazon, from Trailcampro in the US and from NHBS in the UK (I use them for wildlife surveillance). Currently I use Bushnell Aggressor No Glow units (no glow means no visible LED when recording). Cheaper models without HD recording may be perfectly fine for basic monitoring of whether or not there are foxes sniffing around. Lidl has sold some very basic models in the past for as little as Ä50 but I'd recommend spending a bit more. A popular inexpensive brand on Amazon is Acorn. I've had mixed results with these; image quality and robustness are not the best (they glow when recording so not may not be suitable for covert use).

For the same purpose, Three weeks ago I bought from Amazon Uk a camera called Trail Camera,Vizzlema 12MP HD Wildlife Hunting Camera with Infrared Night Vision 940nm. for £79, I like it, it spotted a mouse in the dark, but the distance was only 180 CM. pictures and videos are of good quality.
