Eimear if you are lucky enough to find someone with a really good strain of FCB Marans (don,t know anyone in Ireland)then you could expect to pay 2 to 4 per egg.

i have never heard of all these other maran breeds i thought there was just the french copper marans and the cuckoo maran.

It would depend on the parent birds if there bad quality there worth nothing well to me anyway

Thanks Jamsey. Just read you comments about birds for the freezer. I was wondering about that myself! Do you seperate them from the regular flock and feed them a special diet to get them ready for the table?

Try Jenny, she specialises in and shows cochins, and has blues. Here's a link from an old ad:

There are different types of marans on France. In Arvert a man has blue, white, splash, cuckoo, black and a sex link hybrid maran, which is an excellent layer. Have eggs from all types in incubator

Yeah Eimear, they are grass reared in movable runs, growers & wheat, pellets up to the last month or so and then mainly wheat, flaked maize mash mixed with boiled spuds a few times a week and veg scraps too.

This is a growing Pullet, (Note the feathered feet).

This is a pure Frence Copper Blue Marans that has been bred for size and table bird use.He probaly weighs about 4lb heavier than a normal FCBM.

They hold a good egg colour (at least a 4 on the egg colour scale).
You may get black, blue and splash if you hatch any FCBM eggs, depending how they were mated.

Eggs from mine I charge 20 a dozen, but I cannot send any by post to Ireland.

Susan, thanks for jenny's link, I'll give her a buzz and see if she has any blue Cochins.
Thanks for the contact Tadhg - that's for the FCBMs right?
Castle Farm, your birds are just beautiful, you're obviously a devoted breeder. Here's where I show up my stupidity but what does it mean "4 on the colour scale" - I'm particularly attracted to this breed for their dark coloured eggs, I'm guessing the scale goes up to 5?

Quality French Copper Blue Marans are hard to get in Ireland. I have a two separate flocks myself that have come from France and the Uk. Birds are of show quality and I sell eggs through out Europe. I sell on ebay and pictures of the birds can be seen on there.

The colour of the show birds is usually less deep/intense as the colour of the utility strains.

This brought back a blast from the past,2012, used to have some fine discussions and info sharing back then until destructive forces intervened...such a shame.
