Frozen combs and wattles

Hi everyone as the weather is so bad the last few weeks for people who dont know much about frost bite in chickens combs and wattles i will try and explane it as best as i can; During hard frost a chickens featherless parts can become frozen. This results in dark nearly black discoloration of the parts that have been frozen and the entire comb and wattle, or sections of these, start dying off and can bleed. In cocks this may even cause infertility in spring. chickens with smaller combs and rose combs do not often have this trouble, thus the problem more or less exclusively occurs in birds with large combs, to protect large combs and wattles put some acid-free vaseline on them. does anyone else have trouble with this

my pekin cock has these black spots on the tips of his comb for the past few days. Do i need to put vaseline on every day? Do you think I have left it too long and that serious harm has already been done?

If the combs are only showing slight signs of blue the damage isn't to bad yet. It would be good to house the chicken in a warmer place. If thats not an option you could put a red heater lamp in the chicken house, along with using Vaseline.

just done all my cocks with vaseline. the pekin has two small black bits on the tip of comb. the tips seem to be dead. hopefully he will be alright. i think the main cause of this was a fight with some of the hens which caused his comb to bleed, but this was 3 weeks ago. thanks to all for the info.

Everyday there is hard frost i would put the vaseline on the combs and wattles mostly i put on long combs like rhode island reds, leghorns, minorca's and all the other long comb chickens and i put a bit on all my other chickens as well even if they dont have long combs just to be on the safe side but there is no need to do this on short combs, one off my rhode island cocks was really bad i put it on him but i was to late so now his lovely comb is ruined but i still put the vasline on him to stop him getting worse i will post some pictures of that cock tomorrow.

Hi Mary it depends on how bad the frost bite is it may cause infertility in the spring but it does not go completely it will return , did u start putting vaseline on them i recomend u do. It will heal more quick and it will stop them bleeding. If they have a bad case off frost bite like the tips off the combs are black that means the black parts will die off it does not grow back . but if the combs are blue that means they might go black if u dont start treating them with the vaseline

Good question liam to tell you the truth i dont know how the comb has anything got to do with the fertility i think its got to do with the blood circulation i dont know for sure but i do know that getting frost bite can effect them , its the same with people who cut the entire comb off to increase feritlity its confusing i would like to know more about this myself i will try and find out more info on this subject.

I know i think its cruel ''GREED'' is the best word to describe it Kathy some people and factories like battries farms just cant get inought out off animals they might as well be robots battries farms are disgusting did u know the only amount off space a hen gets in a batterie farm is the size off a A4 sheet off paper not even a foot off space it makes me sick.
